what does an atom consist of?
a small positively charged nucleus surrounded by an equal number of negatively charged electrons
1 of 18
What is a stable/neutral atom?
the atom has the same amount of positive charges (protons) and the same amount of negative charges (electrons)
2 of 18
what causes electrostatic effects?
the transfer or movement of electrons
3 of 18
what does the law of electric charge state?
Like charges repel, unlike charges attract
4 of 18
what happens when a polythene rod is subbed with a duster?
electrons will be transferred from the duster to the rod which makes the rod negatively charged and the duster is now positively charged
5 of 18
what happens when an acetate rod is rubbed with a duster?
electrons will be transferred from the acetate to the duster making the duster negatively charged and the rod positively charges
6 of 18
what causes a negative charge?
an excess of electrons
7 of 18
what causes a positive charge?
a lack of electrons
8 of 18
what is an Ion?
an atom or molecule that has become charged
9 of 18
what happens if inflammable gases or vapours are present or if there is a high concentration of oxygen present?
a spark from static electricity could ignite the gases or vapours and cause explosions.
10 of 18
what happens if a person touches something with a high voltage?
a large amount of electric charges would flow through them to the earth
11 of 18
what are dust and dirt attracted to?
insulators such as television screens
12 of 18
what are synthetic materials attracted to?
the body or to each other
13 of 18
name one way that electric shocks can be avoided?
an object that is likely to become charged is connected to earth so any charge build-up would flow directly down the earth wire.
14 of 18
name a 2nd way electric shocks can be avoided?
in a factory, the operator stands on an insulating mat which stops charge flowing through the person to the earth
15 of 18
name a 3rd way that an electric shock can be prevented
shoes with insulating soles can be worn which stops any charge flowing to the earth
16 of 18
name a 4th way electric shocks can be prevented
fuel tankers can be connected to a conducting cable during refuelling
17 of 18
how do anti static sprays/liquids/cloths work?
they are made from conducting materials and carry away electric charge which prevents a build up of charge
