what did Wundt like to study?
His aim was to study the structure of the human mind to understand behaviours such as sensation and perception. This is called structuralism and the technique he used was introspection

What did Wundt realise after looking at the structure more closely?
That higher mental processes such as learning language, and emotion couldnt be studied in a strict controlled enviroment instead these topics could be described as general trends in human behaviour among groups of people. This is cultural psycology

What is introspection?
comes from the latin meaning 'looking into' where a person gains knowledge about their mental and emotional states. It allows us to observe our inner world

What did Wundt claim about memory and perception?
that with training they could be observed symptomatically using introspection

How did wundt use introspection in his studies?
he would show subjects a controlled stimuli e.g a visual image and then they would be asked to describe the mental processes they were experiencing. These reports could be compared to gather general theories on mental processes

What does it mean when it says 'Psycology as a science
psycology relies on an empiricist view that hold the belif that knowledge is gained from experience and observation when these views were first applied it allowed psycology to emerge as a distinct science

what two assumptions must the new scientific approach be based off of?
Firstly the assumption of determinism which indicates that all behaviour is seen as being caused and secondly the assumption of predictibility that is all behaviour is determined it is also predictable

What is the scientific method?
refers to the use of investigatable methods that are objective systematic and replacable

what must researchers do when using the scientific method?
they must not let preconceived ideas or bias influence their data collection and be systematic in their data collection

When collecting results researchers must
have consideration for the possible influences or other factors changing data and make sure that their observations are replicable
