Psychobiology of memory and emotion; Synaptic Plasticity (L3)

?
Describe Donald Hebb's rule regarding neurons.
Neurons that fire together, wire together
1 of 12
What is LTP?
An increase in synaptic strength following high frequency stimulation of a synapse
2 of 12
How does LTP relate to memory?
It linked to memory consolidation
3 of 12
What part of a rabbit brain did Tim Bliss and Terie Lomo (1973) show LTP in?
Hippocampus
4 of 12
What did the researchers view in the tetanised slice compared to the control, and what does this show?
An increase in amplitude of electrical activity in the neuron even after stimulation ended, showing the neurons retained information about the stimulation
5 of 12
What biological process does LTP consolidation require, and is this for early or late phase LTP?
Protein Synthesis, late phase.
6 of 12
What effect did anisomycin have on LTP?
It blocked the late phase of LTP, showing it needs protein synthesis
7 of 12
What drug antagonises NMDA receptors?
APV
8 of 12
What effect does APV have on LTP, and what does this say about NMDA receptors?
Application of APV impairs E-LTP and L-LTP, so we can assume the receptors are involved with LTP
9 of 12
What does activity recorded in the amygdala show about synaptic potentiation in learning trials?
When the animal still freezes with the absence of a shock and a tone, we will see elevated activity in the amygdala compared to controls showing the cells retained information in training
10 of 12
How can we create artificial memories?
By exciting cells in the amygdala with laser stimulation, mimicking the excitation that occurs during fear conditioning resulting in fear responses
11 of 12
How can LTD lead to increased responding?
When delivering cathodal stimulation (inhibitory) to the cerebellum - the cerebellum is inhibitory of the frontal cortex (like a brake) so inhibiting its activity results in increase of frontal cortex activity
