Weathering
the disintergration or decay of rocks in their original place at or close to the ground surface.
1 of 11
Physical/Mechanical weathering
disintergration of rocks without chemicals usually ending with scree(rock fragments)
2 of 11
Chemical weathering
Rainwater being slightly acidic can slowly dissolve certain rocks and minerals
3 of 11
Biological weathering
Plant roots expanding in cracks of rocks
4 of 11
Freeze thaw weathering
When water freezes and thaws in a crack or hole in the rock. Due to fluctuation of weather
5 of 11
Exfoliation/Onion skin weathering
When outer skin of rock appears to flake due to large fluctuations in temperature and repeated expansion and contraction
6 of 11
Mass movement
The downhill movement of material under the influence of gravity
7 of 11
Rockfall
the collapse of a cliff face or the fall of individual rocksfrom a cliff usually due to freeze thaw
8 of 11
Landslide
When blocks of rock slide downhill
9 of 11
Mudflow
saturated soil and weak rock flows down a slope
