Field experiment in a high quality nursing home in the USA (Connecticut)

91 old people (65-90) (those not in this age group was removed as were non-communicative/bedbound patients)

What did the 2 groups consist of?
2 different floors of the home- 8 males and 36 females were in responsibility group (RIG) on 4th floor and 9 males and 35 females were in the CG on 2nd floor. (balanced in terms of health, class, time at home etc)

What did the first questionnaire given to all pps include?
How happy and active the pps felt from 0-8

What did the questionnaire the day and night nurses have to fill out include?
Assessed the pps across 9 10 point scales including scales such as alertness, active participation and a sense of well-being.

The research assisstant

What was done a week later to the pps and who by?
An different announcement was given out to the pps depending on the group they were in and it was by the 33yr old boss

What did the message to the RIG include?
Emphasized responsibility for themselves-

Whether Thursday or Friday was movie night, told how to complain and giving them a responsibility of choosing and looking after a plant.

Emphasized that the staff were responsible for their happiness.

Which night was movie night, and looked after their plant for them.

3 days later, what were the RIG told?
"We want you to be happy. Treat this like your home and make all the decisions you used to make"

Pps and nurses filled in their questionnaires again (allowing L+R to see if any improvements had been made)

If they went to movie night and if they entered the no. of jelly beans in a jar competition
