What is Pyrexia?
Pyrexia is defined as the rise in body temperature above normal range
E.g over 37.2 (orally)
1 of 7
Why does pyrexia happen?
Pyrexia is a body’s immune response and not the failure to regulate temperature. Usually responding to an infection or illness.
2 of 7
Regulating temperature
The hypothalamus in the brain is responsible for regulating out bodies temperature. Acting as a thermostat
3 of 7
Regulating increase in temp:
Imbalance of homeostasis - may be due to stimulus such as exercise
Blood warms past hypothalamic set point
Hypothalamus detects this change and activates heat loss centre - sweat glands / vasodilation (allowing heat to escape)
Temperature reduces
4 of 7
Regulating decrease in temp:
Imbalance of homeostasis- may be due to cold environment
Blood cooler than hypothalamic set point
Change detected
Vasoconstriction and muscles activated (causing us to shiver)
Temp regulates
5 of 7
Causes- pyrogens
Pyrogens are a circulating protein agent that
produces a fever and can reset the thermostat
in the hypothalamus. Causing disruption to homeostasis and raising the body temperature
6 of 7
Pyrogens
Pyrogens can be either external (Exogeneous) or internal to the body (Endogeneous)
