Population Size

?
How many phases can a popul ation growth phase be split up into?
3
1 of 8
What is phase 1?
Slow growth period- Small numbers of individuals start to reproduce, increasing their population at a slow rate, howeveṛ̣̣̣̣ birth rate still is higher than death rate so there is an increase
2 of 8
What is phase 2?
Rapid growth period- Number of breeding individuals increased so more offspring produced and birth rate is significantly higher than death rate, total population multiplies exponentially, no constraints to limit population
3 of 8
What is phase 3?
Stable state- Further population growth is prevented by limiting factors (food availability, competition etc), death rate and birth rate relatively equal, population size fluctuates but remains roughly the same
4 of 8
What is the term given for the maximum population size an environment can support?
Carrying capacity
5 of 8
What is migration and emigration and how does it affect population size?
M- movement of individuals towards environment increasing population size, E- movement of individuals away from environment, deacreasing population size
6 of 8
What is a density independent factor?
Factors that have an effect on the whole population regardless of its size
7 of 8
Give a few examples of density independent factors
Earthquakes, fires, volcanoes, storms etc
