What is the word and symbol equation for photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide+water=Glucose+Oxygen. 6CO(2)+6H(2)O=C(6)H(12)O(6)+0(2)
1 of 14
Describe the function of leaves
Carries out photosynthesis. Large surface area to maximise absorption of light. Majority of cells contain chlorophyll.
2 of 14
Describe Upper and Lower Epidermis
Don't contain many chloroplasts Relatively transparent. Surrounded by cuticle which entry of pathogens and reduces water loss
3 of 14
Describe Stomata
Tiny pores. Surrounded by guard cells. Allows the movement of CO2 into the cell and O2 and H2O out of the cell. Guard cells change shape
4 of 14
Describe palisade mesophyll layer
Layer of palisade cells under the upper epidermis. Each contain many chloroplasts. Main site of photosynthesis.
5 of 14
Describe spongy mesophyll layer
Not as closely packed as palisade. Creates air spaces inside the leaf to enable gases to move in and out. Don't contain as much chloroplast but can still photosynthesise
6 of 14
What factors affect the rate of photosynthesis
Light intensity. CO2 concentration. Temperature. Chlorophyll amount
7 of 14
What does nitrate and lack of do
Makes AA, proteins, chlorophyll, DNA and many other components. Limited growth plant and older leaves turn yellow
8 of 14
What does phosphate and lack of do
Makes DNA and many other coumpounds, part of cell membrane. Poor root growth and younger leaves turn purple.
9 of 14
What does potassium and lack of do
Needed for enzymes of respiration and photosynthesis to work. Leaves turn yellow with dead spots
10 of 14
What does Magnesium and Iron and lack of do
Part of a chlorophyll molecule. Needed to produce chlorophyll. Leaves turn yellow.
11 of 14
Describe the relationship between Photosynthesis and Respiration in the morning
Plant is photosynthesising and respiring. Rate of photosynthesis is higher than rate of respiration. Net uptake of CO2
12 of 14
Describe the relationship between Photosynthesis and Respiration at the compensation point
Rate of photosynthesis= Rate of respiration
13 of 14
Describe the relationship between Photosynthesis and Respiration with negative CO2 uptake
The plant is respiring and photosynthesising. The rate of respiration is higher than the rate of photosynthesis.
