?
State the type of energy released in a fission reaction.
Kinetic Energy
1 of 16
Explain the role of the moderator in a fission reaction.
Slows neutrons/reduces KE of neutrons;
2 of 16
Explain, in terms of neutrons, what is meant by controlled nuclear fission.
Each fission (of a nucleus) caused by a single neutron;but each fission releases more than one neutron and excess neutrons can speed up the reaction. However, control rods regulate the rate of fission/reaction.
3 of 16
Which property is the same for all EM waves?
Speed in free space
4 of 16
Explain how you can work out the resistance of an LDR using a circuit containing a voltmeter and ammeter.
Measure current / take current reading and then divide voltage (reading) by current (reading). (R=V/I)
5 of 16
What phrase describes a contrary relationship between two variables such that they move in opposite directions? (Negative correlation)
Inverse/non-linear relationship.
6 of 16
How does a diagram showing the weekly position of a comet show the change in speed each week?
Same time between observations but there are different distances between observations
7 of 16
Suggest why the speed of a comet changes depending where it is
It is pulled by the Sun’s gravitational force so when it is closer to the sun it's speed increases.
8 of 16
Explains what happens to a light ray when it enters a glass block and total internal reflection occurs.
When total internal reflection takes place, the light doesn't bend as it enters to block. It only bends when it meets a straight edge of a glass block. It also doesn't deviate when it leaves the glass block.
9 of 16
Explain why the quantity called refractive index has no unit.
RI= sin i/sinr and a sine is a number/ratio. Refractive index is only a number/ratio.
10 of 16
Explain the purpose of the brushes and the commutator in a d.c. motor.
Provides a connection/current to the coil/commutator and reverses the current in the coil. So that the force is always in the same direction; the moment is always in the same direction so that the motor keeps turning (the same way).
11 of 16
State what happens to the motor when both the magnetic field and the current are reversed.
No (overall) effect and the direction remains the same;
12 of 16
State the relationship between kinetic energy (KE), mass and velocity.
KE = ½ × m × v2
13 of 16
A driver applies the brakes to stop a train.State what happens to the kinetic energy of the train.
Energy is transferred to surroundings.
14 of 16
The passengers who use a station are carried from platform level to street level in a lift. Explain why these passengers gain gravitational potential energy in the lift, even when they are below ground.
GPE = m x g x h. Passengers have moved to a higher point/upwards and work is done to move the passengers.
15 of 16
Suggest why UV radiation does not pass down to a polar bear’s skin through it's hollow hairs.
reflection in hair is external, not internal; there is no critical angle.
