Physics Unit 4 - Momentum

?
Is momentum a scalar or a vector quantity?
Vector
1 of 9
If you want to stop an object from moving, what must be removed?
The objects momentum
2 of 9
How can you investigate the rate of change of momentum?
Record the movement of a trolley over time as a force makes it move from rest. Plot a graph of Momentum-Time, the gradient will equal the force (rate of change of momentum)
3 of 9
What is the conservation of momentum dependent on?
That no external forces act
4 of 9
How is momentum conserved in an explosion?
The momentum before = 0. Therefore the momentum after must be zero. Thing move in opposite directions and different speeds, these will cancel out to give 0 momentum.
5 of 9
How is the conservation of momentum responsible for Newton's third law?
A force changing the momentum in one direction must be countered by an equal and opposite force to ensure that the overall momentum is conserved
6 of 9
What type of collision is kinetic energy conserved?
Elastic collision
7 of 9
What is an example of an elastic collision?
Alpha particles being scattered by a nucleus
8 of 9
On a velocity time graph, how could you see a change in direction?
There would be negative velocity
