Physics Unit 3.2 Moments

?
What is a moment?
A moment is a force that causes turning around a point, or fulcrum.
1 of 9
What can moments be used to do?
Create an apparently larger turning force by increasing the perpendicular distance between the effort and the fulcrum. What is actually happening is a larger moment is created from the same effort.
2 of 9
When the force is applied at an angle, other than right angles to the distance of the point, the effort is lessened.

3 of 9
If an object is not turning, what is the moment?
The total clockwise moment must be exactly balanced by the total anticlockwise moment about any pivot.
4 of 9
What is a lever often referred as?
Force mutliplyer.
5 of 9
Describe levers, and use examples.
A lever is a simple machine that makes work easier to do. Examples of simple levers include cutting with scissors, or lifting the lid on a tin of paint with a screwdriver. Levers reduce the force needed to perform these tasks.
6 of 9
Describe what happens when someone uses a lever.
When someone uses a lever, they exert a force (the effort) around a pivot to move an object (the load).
7 of 9
Levers rely on the principle of moments to act as ‘force multipliers’ - they reduce the effort needed to move the load by increasing the distance over which it is acting. This means a relatively small effort force has a much greater effect.

8 of 9
What happens if the line of action lies outside the object?
There will be a resultant moment and the body will tend to topple. anti-clockwise moment is greater than the clockwise moment and the object topples over.
