Visible light, infrared radiation, microwaves and radio waves.
2 of 15
What is visible light?
Visible light is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is detected by our eyes.
3 of 15
How do we see different wavelengths within visible light?
As different colours.
4 of 15
In relation to visible light, how do we see a mixture of all the colours?
As white light.
5 of 15
What happens to the wavelength of visible light?
It increases across the spectrum from violet to red.
6 of 15
What can visible light be used for?
Photography.
7 of 15
What is infrared (IR) radiation?
It is radiation given out by all objects, the hotter the object the more IR wavelengths it emits.
8 of 15
What devices use infrared (IR) radiation?
Remote controls for devices such as TVs and CD players.
9 of 15
What are microwaves used in?
Communications, microwave transmitters produce wavelengths that are able to pass through the atmosphere and are used to send signals to and from satellites and within mobile phone networks.
10 of 15
How are radio waves used?
To transmit radio and TV programmes and carry mobile phone signals.
11 of 15
What effect can microwave radiation and radio waves have?
They penetrate your skin and are absorbed by body tissue, this can heat internal organs and may damage them.
12 of 15
What effect does infrared radiation have on the body?
It is also absorbed by skin and too much will burn your skin.
13 of 15
Which have the longer wavelengths, microwaves or radio waves?
Radio waves.
