What is fauna and flora?
Fauna- all types of animals that live in a specific area. Flora- All types of plant species that live in a specific area.
3 of 25
What is a biome?
Global climate zone with similar flora, fauna &climate
4 of 25
What does weather take into account?
temperature, precipitation, humidity & atmospheric pressure of the part of the atmosphere closest to the surface of Earth
5 of 25
STATEMENT
Climate refers to what is expected to happen in the atmosphere
6 of 25
STATEMENT
Weather can differ to what is suggested by climate
7 of 25
What can affect climate?
landscape, relief & activities taking place (Human & Natural). This can alter over time and space
8 of 25
Can climate vary?
Yes. From place to place eg. Top of a hill, sunny/shady side.
9 of 25
What are Microclimates?
Areas with small variations.
10 of 25
What are climates influenced by?
proximity to equator or sea, ocean currents & prevailing wind.
11 of 25
What is prevailing wind?
Wind direction that occurs most often throughout the year.

Types of vegetation & Animals are influenced by?
Climate.

FACTORS AFFECTING CLIMATES- Latitude or distance from equator
temperatures drop further away from equator. Sun is at a lower angle in the sky when areas are close to the poles. More energy is lost so temperatures are cooler.
14 of 25
IN ADDITION- latitude or distance from equator
ice + snow nearer the poles causes a higher albedo (More solar light is reflected) contributes to the cold.
15 of 25
Altitude or height above sea level
higher altitudes have colder temperatures. usually decrease -1 degree every 100m in altitude
16 of 25
Distance from sea
Oceans heat & cool down more slowly than land. Coastal locations cooler in summer & warmer in winter
17 of 25
Ocean currents
UK has a maritime climate- warm ocean (the north atlantic drift) keeps Britain warmer & wetter
18 of 25
Prevailing wind
Pwind blows over land can contribute to creating desert climates
