P2 - Drag and Terminal Velocity

  • Friction
  • Stopping Distance
?
What is friction?
The force that acts in the opposite direction to movement.
1 of 6
What is drag?
Friction when an object passes through a fluid. It's effect can be reduced by making the object streamlined so the air passes over it. drag increases as the speed increases.
2 of 6
What is terminal velocity?
The maximum speed, when the object can't accelerate anymore.
3 of 6
What is an example of terminal velocity?
A skydiver without a parachute has a small surface area so his terminal velocity will reach around 120 mph. With his parachute open, there's more air resistance but the same force. This brings the terminal velocity down to 15 mph.
4 of 6
What is thinking distance?
How long it takes to notice a hazard before applying the brakes. It's affected by how fast you're going and how dopey you are (tired, drugs, alcohol, old age).
5 of 6
What is braking distance?
How long the car travels during deceleration. this is affected by how fast you're going, how heavy loaded the vehicle is, how good you're brakes are, how good the grip is.
