p1 revision flashcards

?
Who was Alfred Wegener and what did he discover?
He was the scientist who discovered seafloor spreading.
1 of 19
What evidence did Wegener have?
Continents fitting together, matching fossils on different continents, mountain chains at edges of continents.
2 of 19
What is the San Andreas Fault?
A place in California where there is a plate boundary, so there are lots of earthquakes there.
3 of 19
What type of wave is a Primary wave?
A longitudinal wave which can travel through both liquids and solids.
4 of 19
What type of wave is a Secondary wave?
A transverse wave which can travel through solids but not liquids.
5 of 19
Wavespeed (m/s) = ?
Frequency (s) x wavelength (m).
6 of 19
What is a wave?
A disturbance caused by a vibration. It transfers energy NOT matter.
7 of 19
S/P wave equation. Distance (m) = ?
Wavespeed (m/s) x Time (s).
8 of 19
Frequency (s) = ?
1 / Time Period.
9 of 19
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz (Hz)
10 of 19
How do we know the inner core is solid?
Because S waves can travel through it and they can only travel through solids.
11 of 19
What is the Time Period?
The time taken for a complete wave to pass a point.
12 of 19
What is the amplitude?
The maximum displacement of the oscillations from their rest points.
13 of 19
What is frequency?
The amount of waves passing a fixed point each second.
14 of 19
What are faster, P waves or S waves?
P waves.
15 of 19
Why did scientists disagree with Weneger?
Because there was no evidence of the continents moving and there was not enough evidence.
16 of 19
What would happen to mountains if they were not being continuously formed?
They would be worn down to sea level by erosion.
17 of 19
What is a medium?
A substance a wave is travelling through.
18 of 19
What is lambda (upside down Y)?
Wavelength.
