participant observation
Is a way of collecting data that the participants' behaviour is recorded by a researcher who is engaged with them as part of the social setting.

Non-participant observation
Is a way of collecting data that the participants' behaviour is recorded by a researcher who is not engaging with as part of the social setting. The observer may be overt or covert.

Overt observation (disclosed observation)
Is research in which the role of the observer is known to participants.

Covert observation (non-disclosed observation)
Is research in which participants are unaware that they are being watched. The observer may be a participant or non participant.

Controlled observation
Behaviours seen are recorded by researchers in situations in which there has been some manipulation (e.g in the social or physical environment) by the researchers. Observations may be conducted in either- participants' normal area or artificial -lab

Naturalistic observation
Is a research method in which behaviours seen in the participants' normal enviroment are recorded without interference from the researchers in either the social or physical enviroment.

Time sampling
Is a data-collected technique that uses a limited list of possible activities. The occurrence of these activities is recorded in relation to short, specified time intervals.

Event sampling
Is a data-collected technique that uses a checklist of possible activities, which are tailed as they occur.

Observer bias
Is the tendency of an observer to record behaviours taht tehy believe should or will occur, or to identify behaviours within context of their subjective perspective, rather than recording those behaviours that are actually occurring.
