What body composition changes happen with age?
Decreased bone density (increased risk of fractures). Increased adipose tissue mass (increased inflammatory state, insulin resistance, increased risk of CVD & type 2 diabetes). Decreased lean tissue mass (decreased basal metabolic rate, sarcopenia)
1 of 8
What are the mechanisms underlying sarcopenia?
Inactivity/immobilisation, loss of spinal motor neurons, mitochondrial damage, imflammation, hormonal factors, undernutrition (lack of protein, nutrient insensitivity, vit D deficiency, physiological anorexia)
2 of 8
What gastrointestinal changes happen with age?
Selective neuro-degeneration of enteric nervous system, impairment in relaxation of gastric fundus, decreased gastric motility/acid secretion (decreased absorption of protein, vitamins, folate, iron)/pancreatic enzyme secretion/lactase activity
3 of 8
What neurological changes happen with age?
Brain atrophy, loss of sensory acuity
4 of 8
What hepatic & renal changes happen with age?
Decreased liver size & blood flow (reduced bile production, reduced albumin synthesis). Decreased glomerular filtration rate
5 of 8
What immune changes happen with age?
Poor wound healing (increasing protein intake can help), decreased T-cell function (increasing vitamin D can help)
6 of 8
What dentition changes happen with age?
Salivary glands shrink, poor oral hygiene, lac of teeth or poorly fitting dentures
7 of 8
What factors should be considered when assessing nutritional risk in older people?
Social factors, mental status, dentition/swallowing, presence of disease, financial status etc
8 of 8
