What is the job of the nervous system?

What is a stimulus?
Any change you can detect in your surroundings.

What are stimuli detected by?
Receptor cells.

If the sense organ is the retina in the eye, what does the stimulus detect?
Light.

What does the CNS involve?
The brain and the spinal cord.

What is the peripheral nervous system?
It is made up of nerves that connect receptor cells to the CNS.

What are the three different types of neurones in the nerves?
Sensory neurones, motor neurones and Multi polar neurones.

What do the motor neurons do?
They carry messages from the CNS to the effector organs.

What do sensory neurons do?
They carry messages from the receptor cells to the CNS.

What are Synapses?
Where the nerve cells have a very small gap between them.

What is their job?
Impulses are carried across the gap by chemicals called neurotransmitters.

What are the two ways in which the body responds?
Voluntary actions and Reflex actions.
