What does the CNS (central nervous system)do?
The CNS coordinates a response to a stimulus
1 of 14
What is another name for nerve cells?
Neurones
2 of 14
How does the CNS coordinate a response?
Stimulus detected by the receptors-info sent as nervous(electrical) impulses along sensory neurons to CNS-CNS coordinates response by sending info to an effector along motor neurone with a nervous impulse. The effector then responds accordingly
3 of 14
Give some examples of effectors
Muscle contracts or gland secretes a hormone
4 of 14
What is the Synapse?
a junction(gap) between 2 neurons
5 of 14
Explain the importance of synapses in the Nervous System.
electrical impulse triggers release of neurotransmitter chemicals which diffuse across synapse. These chemicals bind onto receptor molecules in membrane of next neuron-triggering another electrical impulse-how info is passed between neurones
6 of 14
Explain how the Reflex Arc works?
1)Stimulus detected by receptor 2)nervous impulse pass to CNS along sensory neuron to relay neuron-which passes the impulse to the effector along motor neuron .The effector then coordinates the response
7 of 14
Why does the Reflex arc not involve the conscious part of the brain?
The relflex arc doesn't involve the conscious part of brain, so no time is wasting thinking about the right response-this makes reflexes automatic & rapid, limiting the amount of damage done to the body
8 of 14
If you touch a flame what's the stimulus, receptor and response?
Stimulus:heat from the flame Receptor:Skin Response:The hand pulls away form the flame
9 of 14
What stimuli does Skin(a sense organ) detect?
Changes in Pressure &Temperature as well as Pain
10 of 14
What stimuli does tongue (a sense organ) detect?
Chemicals e.g. in food and drink
11 of 14
What stimuli does Nose(a sense organ) detect?
Chemicals e.g.in the air
12 of 14
What stimuli does Eye(a sense organ) detect?
light
13 of 14
What stimuli does Ear(a sense organ) detect?
sound and position of head
