What is the human nervous system and its purpose?
The nervous system is a specialised network of cells which make up internal communication system. Its purpose is to respond to infomation in the environment and to co-ordinate the working of organs and cells in the body.
1 of 15
What is the function of the CNS?
The Central Nervous System receives information from the senses and controls the body’s response
2 of 15
What is the CNS made up of?
The brain and spinal chord
3 of 15
What is the function of the brain?
The brain co-ordinates sensation, intellectual and nervous activity.
It interprets information and controls higher mental functions.
4 of 15
What is the function of the spinal chord?
The spinal chord is an extension of the brain. It passes messages to and from the brain, connects nerves to the PNS and is responsible for reflex actions.
5 of 15
What part of the nervous system is not part of the CNS?
The peripheral nervous system
6 of 15
What is the function of the PNS?
The peripheral nervous system transmits messages to the CNS from the senses, and messages from the CNS to the organs.
7 of 15
What is the PNS made up of?
The PNS is made up of the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system
8 of 15
What is the function of the somatic nervous system?
The somatic nervous system controls conscious/voluntary muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors.
9 of 15
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
The autonomic nervous system controls the brain’s involuntary activities and is self-regulating/operates automatically. It transmits information to and from internal organs to maintain the body’s balance in response to stress.
10 of 15
What is the autonomic nervous system made up of?
The autonomic nervous system is made up of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
11 of 15
What is the function of the sympathetic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system responds to emergencies using the fight or flight response. It prepares the body to expend energy in response to a stressor in the environment.
12 of 15
What will the sympathetic nervous system do to the body?
It decreases production of saliva (dry mouth), heavier breathing, faster heart rate, dilates pupils, slows digestion, stimulates production of glucose, relaxes bladder (stimulates urination), dilates bronchi
13 of 15
What is the function of the parasympatheic nervous system?
The parasympathetic nervous system activates during times of rest, calming the body after an emergency to maintain balance.
It is involved in energy conservation and digestion.
14 of 15
What will the parasympathetic nervous system do to the body?
It increases digestion (bile production), slower breathing, slower heart rate, decreases urination (contracts bladder), constricts bronchi, increases production of saliva
