You don't actually have to know the names of researchers, you just need to know what they did :)

the duration of STM is 20 seconds max. found in a study by peterson and peterson. they gave paricipants a nonsense trigram (like WRT304) and told them to count back from that mumber in 3's or 4's until told to stop (varied between 3,6,9,12,15&18 seconds) 90% could recall the trigram after 3 seconds but only 2% after 18 seconds therefore peterson and peterson concluded that the duration on the STM was 20 seconds

further research suggested that the duration of STM is 30 seconds max. and also AQA mark schemes look for 30seconds max. so I believe that this would be the duration worth learning.
