What does mitosis do?
Mitosis makes new cells for growth and repair.
1 of 12
What are diploid and what does this mean?
Human body cells. This means they have two versions of each chromosome - one from the person's mother and one from their father.
2 of 12
What happens when a cell divides?
It makes two cells identical to the original cell, each with a nucleus containing the same number of chromosomes as the original cell.
3 of 12
What is this type of cell division called and what is it used for?
This type of cell division is called mitosis. Used when humans (and animals and plants) want to grow or replace cells that have been damaged
4 of 12
What does mitosis result in?
Two identical cells.
5 of 12
What happens with a cell that's not dividing? (Process of Mitosis)
In a cell that's not dividing, the DNA is all spread out in long strings.
6 of 12
What happens first in mitosis?
If the cell gets a signal to divide, it needs to duplicate its DNA, so there's one copy for each new cell. DNA is copied and forms X-shaped chromosomes. Each 'arm ' of the chromosome is an exact duplicate of the other.
7 of 12
What happens secondly in mitosis?
Chromosomes then line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart. The two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell.
8 of 12
What happens thirdly in mitosis?
Membranes form around each of the sets of chromosomes, which become the nuclei of the two new cells.
9 of 12
What happens lastly in mitosis?
The cytoplasm divides.
10 of 12
What is the result of mitosis?
There are two new diploid cells containing exactly the same DNA, which are genetically identical.
11 of 12
What sort of reproduction also uses mitosis? Give an example.m
Asexual reproduction (e.g, strawberry plants form runners in this way, which become new plants). They have exactly the same genes as the parent - no genetic variation.
