The cell cycle...
makes new cells for growth, repair and asexual reproduction
1 of 16
Interphase
DNA is spread out in long strings. Before it divides it must grow to increase the amount of sub-cellular structures. The DNA is then duplicated so there's a copy for each new cell.
2 of 16
How many stages is mitosis dived into?
four stages
3 of 16
Prophase
The chromosomes condense, getting shorter and fatter. The membrane around the nucleus breaks down and the chromosomes lie free in the cytoplasm.
4 of 16
Metaphase
The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell
5 of 16
Anaphase
Cell fibers pull the chromosome apart. The two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell
6 of 16
Telophase
Membranes form around each of the sets of chromosomes. These become the nuclei of the two new cells - the nucleus has divided
7 of 16
Cytokinesis
Before telophase ends, the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two separate cells
8 of 16
What is produced after mitosis?
two diploid identical daughter cells
9 of 16
What are the daughter cells to the parent?
Genetically identical
10 of 16
genome
All of an organism's DNA
11 of 16
What are chromosomes?
Coiled up lengths of DNA molecules
12 of 16
What's the order of the cell cycle?
Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis
13 of 16
Why must the cell grow during interphase?
To increase the amount of sub-cellular structures
14 of 16
Which phase involves the chromosomes lining up at the centre of the cell?
Metaphase
15 of 16
Which phase involves the division of the nucleus (still conjoined)?
Telophase
