Median Nerve Flash Cards

?
Where do the nerve roots of the median nerve originate?
C5/C6/C7/C8/T1.
1 of 15
Which cords unify to form the central line of the characteristic 'M' in the brachial plexus?
Medial and Lateral Cords.
2 of 15
When passing through the axilla, does the median nerve follow a superficial or a deep course?
Superficial.
3 of 15
Where does the median nerve lie in relation to the brachial artery?
Within the brachium it lies laterally, however it crosses over to lie medially at the cubital fossa.
4 of 15
Which tendons does the median nerve pass between prior to entering the antebrachium?
The tendons of the biceps brachii and the brachialis.
5 of 15
Upon entering the antebrachium, what does the median nerve pass through?
The deep and superficial heads of the pronator teres muscle?
6 of 15
Once the median nerve begins to run deep, what muscles does it pass through?
Flexor digitorum profundus and superficialis.
7 of 15
What muscles of the antebrachium are innervated by the median nerve?
Pronator teres, palmaris longus, flexor digitorum superficialis and the flexor carpi radialis.
8 of 15
Name two nerves that the median nerve branches into.
Anterior interosseous nerve, and the cutaneous nerve of the palm.
9 of 15
Which branch of the median nerve does NOT pass through the carpal tunnel?
The palmar cutaneous nerve.
10 of 15
What does the median nerve terminate into?
Articular branches to the distal radio ulnar, radoiocarpal and carpal joints.
11 of 15
What does the median nerve divide into once it has passed through the carpal tunnel, and what do they supply?
Two common palmar digital nerves. First = supplies the radial lumbricals, and a common branch between the index and middle fingers. Second = runs between the ring and middle finger and divides to give the proper digital nerves.
12 of 15
In regards to the radial three and a half fingers, what aspect does the second palmar digital nerve innervate?
The palmar aspect.
13 of 15
Arguably, what is the most important innervation of the median nerve?
Muscles of the thenar eminence.
14 of 15
What are three clinical conditions affecting the median nerve/ a result of damage to the median nerve?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Hand of Benediction, Simian/Ape Hand Deformity
