Tibial Nerve Flash Cards

?
Where does the sciatic nerve exit the pelvis?
Through the greater sciatic Forman.
1 of 6
Describe the route of the sciatic nerve until it reaches the knee joint.
The sciatic nerve exits the pelvis and runs posterior to the femur, deep to the biceps femoris (lateral hamstring), to the popliteal fossa on the posterior aspect of the knee joint.
2 of 6
Other than the tibial nerve, what does the sciatic nerve branch into and what course does it follow?
The common fibular nerve descends laterally, superficially wrapping around the fibular head. It then forms the superficial and deep branches which innervate the lateral, anterior aspect of the leg.
3 of 6
Describe the course of the tibial nerve?
Descends the popliteal fossa in the midline, medial to the common fibular and then enters the lower leg in the midline before entering the foot medially at the ankle joint.
4 of 6
Why is it possible to stimulate the tibial nerve at the popliteal fossa?
The nerve runs superficially at this location.
5 of 6
What is the clinical complication. of compression of the tibial nerve?
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
