Clues

  • "Binary oppositions" - During action/adventure films there is usually a conflict between characters of an opposite role. (4, 7)
  • "Equilibrium, Disruption, Restoration" - The sequence of general events that may occur. Equilibrium-a sense of normality. Disruption-something that makes the story change direction. Restoration-a new equilibrium is made and the disruption is resolved (7, 7)
  • "Men act, Women appear" - Men are active/dominant in media texts and the women are there to be looked at and play a smaller more vulnerable role - They appear (4, 6)
  • "Repetition and difference" - The need to repeat certain codes and conventions so audiences can recognise the genre, but there also need to be difference to prevent the audiences from becoming bored. (5, 5)
  • "Stock characters" - The general characters that are used in media texts, some examples: Villain, Donor (provider), Helper, Princess, Dispatcher, Hero, False hero (8, 5)
  • "The Male Gaze" - The audience, both men and women, are positioned to view the media text as men: Women are viewed as sexual objects of desire, Men want to be with the women in the text and women want to be like the women in the text. (5, 6)
