At once a band of soldiers, having been led by the centurion, hurried to the granaries to find out the reason for the noise.

Modestus exsultans “insidias Britannis paravi” inquit “Vercobrix ipse multus *** Britannis in horreo inclusus est”
Modestus exulting said, ‘I have prepared a trap for the Britons. Vercobrix himself is imprisoned in the granary with many Britons.’

Breve erat certamen. Tantus erat numerus militum Romanorum ut Britannos facile superarent
The fight was short. The number of Roman soldiers was so great that they easily overpowered the Britons

Romani britannos ex horreo extractos ad carcerem reduxerunt.
The Romans led the Britons back the prison after they had been dragged out of the granary.

Tum legatis legionis ipse modestum arcessitum laudavit.
Then the commander of the legion himself praised Modestus after summoning him.

‘Modestus,’ he said, ‘I have never before seen a soldier braver than you. It is right for us to give you a reward.’

Modestus, a legato ita laudatus, adeo gaudebant ut vix se continere posset.
Modestus, having been praised in this way by the commander, was rejoicing so much that he could scarcely contain himself.

Pecuniam laetus exspectabant. “carceri te praeficio” inquit legatus.
He was happily waiting for money. ‘I put you in charge of the prison’ said the commander.
