Maths in Psychology: Data

?
What is quantitative data?
Data taking the form of numbers
1 of 20
What is qualitative data?
Data not taking the form of numbers
2 of 20
What is primary data?
Data generated by oneself
3 of 20
What is secondary data?
Data generated by an entity other than oneself
4 of 20
What is the mean and how is it calculated?
The mean is a method of averaging a set of quantitative data and is calculated by adding the values of each data point and dividing that total by the number of data points
5 of 20
What is the median?
The middle value in a data set
6 of 20
What is the mode?
The most commonly occurring value in a data set
7 of 20
How do you calculate a percentage?
Portion of value/Total value x 100 e.g. 250 participants in a food study, 100 of them like apples therefore 100/250 x 100 = 40%
8 of 20
How do you present a graph?
Have a short and informative title and clearly labelled x + y axis
9 of 20
How do you present a bar graph?
Suitable for non-continuous (discrete) data. Have gaps between the bars. Consistent values on the y-axis
10 of 20
How do you present a line graph?
The dots go where the tops of the bars in a bar graph would go and are connected by a smooth line. The IV tends to be plotted n the x-axis and the DV on the y-axis and are suitable for continuous data
11 of 20
How do you present a histogram?
No gaps, must have a true zero and is suitable for continuous data e.g. age
x-axis is split into equal intervals of a single category and the y-axis is the frequency of data in these categories
12 of 20
What is a true zero?
The zero point on the measurement scale means nothing of the variable exists
13 of 20
What is normal distribution?
A symmetrical spread of frequency with mean, median and mode located at the highest peak i.e. a bell shaped curve
14 of 20
What is skewed distribution?
An asymmetrical spread of data, with data clustering at one end
15 of 20
What is a positive and negative skew?
A positive skew has most of the data bunched on the left and slopes to the right and a negative skew is the reverse of this
16 of 20
What happens to the mean, median and mode in skews?
The mode remains at the highest point of the graph but the median and mean are pulled towards the long tail of the graph i.e. the shallow slope
17 of 20
What is nominal data?
"Nominal" = "In name" Categorical data with no rank order, equal spacing between values, or a true zero value e.g. hair colour, favourite sports team
18 of 20
What is ordinal data?
Subjective data that can be categorised and ranked but has no even spacing or true zero e.g. How much do you like Crossy Road? Not at all, A little, A lot
19 of 20
What is Interval data?
Numerical data that can be categorised, ranked an is evenly spaced but possesses no true zero e.g. time, temperature, weight etc.
