What are the differences between Marxism and Functionalism?
Marxism: Conflict, False class consiousness, exploitation, alienation and opression. Functionalism: Consensus, social solidarity, harmonious, anomie, evolutionary approach

Historical Materialism
Humans are beings with material needs like food. This means that people need to work to get them. In early human history the means of production was unaided labour but now we have machines to help us.

Capitalism
In early human history there was no classes/exploitation. Marx calls this 'primitive communism'. he identifies three catagories of this; ancient society, feudal soceity and capitalist society.

Class consiousness
The W/C develop a consiousness of their own economic intreasts.

Ideology
The bourgiousie own the means of mental production (the production of ideas). This ideology fosters a consiousness in the subordinate classes

Alienation
Alienation is the result of loss of control, which is the opposite of functionalists views about anomie.

The state, revolution and crime
Marx defines the state as 'armed bodies of men' like the army and police ect. It exists to protect the intrests of the class owners (ruling class). Marx also suggests that we will form a revolution to overthrow the ruling class.

Class
Marx's view is a simplistic view of inequality, he sees class as the only important division. Weber said that status and power can also be sources of inquality.

Webers view
Weber takes marx's ideas further and sub-divides the classes. for example, skilled and unskilled.

Economic determination
Marx suggests that economic factors are the sole cause for everything in society however humans do have free will.

He says that it was in fact the ideas of things like calvanism that helped to bring modern day capitalism to life.
