The Great Chain of Being – Divine Right of Kings
in Shakespeare's era, people believed authority was derived from God. First God, angel, mankind, animals etc. for humans the king was first. men better than women, God gave the kings their power. should accept their position and rewarded in heaven.

relates to king’s interests: his fascination with the supernatural (witches and prophecies); it compliments him making his ancestor, Banquo, a hero in play. King James had survived assassination, Moral; dont mess with monarchy or end up like macbeth

in those times, witches seen as evil and were killed. could change weather; create storms, lightening, change day cycle. Thought they were satans agents, used to go near graves to make evil rites and potions. king james wrote book about demonology.

lady macbeth resembled eve as temptress. Tries to get macbeth to kill king so badly. Eve told not to eat fruit from tree of knowledge, when serpent said she won't get punished she ate from tree.

serpent planted seed in eve's head about eating fruit despite told not to, like witches planting seed of ambition in Macbeth’s head when they prophesised that he would become king.

patriarchal society. women were regarded as "weaker sex" and believed they needed someone to look after them if married husband has to look after. if not, dad, brother or any male relative has to look after them.

War of the Roses – Stuart dynasty
century earlier, England suffered under massive disorder of War of the Roses. Civil disorder seen ultimate disaster, also an ungodly state. The threat of an ‘outsider’ taking over.

The Gunpowder plot 1605
The play first performed not long after the Gunpowder plot. Shakespeare shows murderers of a king tormented by the their own guilt and driven to their doom.
