People went west becasuse of: Poverty,Disease,Eastern overpopulation and Taxation that occured in the East.

People went west because: they were looking for a new start,Fertile cheap land,Gold and silver and Government encouragement.

Why was the journey west across the Great Plains tough?
The journey west was tough because, it took 5months to cross the Oregon and California Trails (About 2000 miles, which mountains and deserts had to be crossed). Lack of disipline and experience caused dangerous delays.

The jouney west was tough because, The Donner party tried a short cut, heading to Calofornia, and they were trapped by deep snow in the Sierra Nevada in 1846. 87 people went, less than 50 people survived - by eating thoses who died!!

Manifest destiny is when many white settlers belived that they were destined to ocupy and govern all of North America.

The Mormons were hard working and successful. They founded a bank in Kirtland. A lot of non-mormons invested into the bank. The bank went Bankrupt, eveyone lost thier money. Mormons driven out of Kirtland.

Mormons rebuilt the town and named it, grew rapidly. Smith indrodued Polygamy in1844,non-mormons and some mormans thought this was wrong,critised Smith in newspaper. Smith destroyed printing presses making himself look like a dictator.

He knew they could live in the East however, needed somewhere isolated to live.He also knew, this was by the Great Salt Lake City.This part of the Rookie mountains still belonged to the Mexicos.(outside the control of the US government)

They made preparations all winter(building wagons,collecting food supplies and collecting of equipment).

They let Pioneer bands leave first to set up camps along the way. They planted crops and marked out routes for the Mormons to follow. Every one stopped, ate and slept at the same time. They built winter quaeters where they spent winter.

What problems did the Mormons face in the Great Salt Lake City?
Mormons had to develop irrigation schemes, using snow and water from the mountains. There was lack of building materials, so Mormons had to make houses from mud bricks. There were not enough mormons in the community to be self-sufficicent.
