General farm
Increased the amount of income the king got. Improved the indirect taxation in 13 provinces and passed on the problems of corruption to the tax farmers. Yielded 56670000 livres in 1681

helped to weed out false claims of noble privelige in Pays D'etat whose direct tax exemption relied on the status of nobility. Increased the revenue of taxation and in provence alone over 1000 faux nobles were discovered (increased revenue of taille)

peculation-tax corruption was dealt with as the corruption was now the tax farmer's problem (see General Farm). Increased revenue by 100m livres between 1661 and 1669

Balance of Tax
By increasing the tax on tarrifs and imported luxuries Colbert increased the amount of indirect tax that the wealthy paid. This took some of the weight off the third estate who were the only ones not exempt from direct taxation.

Taille Reelle payment suggested by intendants
Colbert pressured members of various assemblies to allow the intendants to decide the amount of taille reelle that should be paid. Languedoc submitted by 1665 (previously difficult). Brittany was given back 300000 livres in 1671 because of generosity

Guilds
Challenged the guilds by over-riding monopolies where he believed it was hindering economic growth. (Allowed increased revenue). By 1673 membership to Guild became compulsory to ensure standardization of quality

Foreign investment
Colbert bribed foreign craftsmen to enter France to encourage investment in the industry

Gobelin Tapestries
Hung in Versailles, these tapestries were coveted across Europe and helped to establish Paris as the centre of fashion. This helped to boost exports.

Subsidizing luxuries
Luxuries like glass, lace and textiles were subsidized and Venetian glass and lace was forbidden. This was done to boost France's economic strength; increase their exports and decrease their imports.

Maritime concerns
Increased the number of ocean going merchant ships from six to 300. This encourage and helped industrial development. Rochefort was built on the West Coast to service shipbuilding. Dunkirk (N) and Toulon (S) also experienced rapid growth

Overseas trading companies
Were serviced by rapidly growing industries and interests from traders was high to begin with. However merchants became discouraged by JBC's constant inteference and interest dropped. Madagascan trading company was abandoned-jst1 styed post JBC death

Infrastructure projects
Projects such as Paves du roi- stone built roads and the Canal du languedoc were designed to help the economy by making it easier to transport goods However, they were the exeption and roads+waterways remained under-developed.

Local tariffs
Colbert tried to get rid of local tarrifs (peages-landowner; traites-king). This resisted Colbert's grasp and meant he was unsuccessful

Focus on luxury goods
Meant that Colbert failed to see the importance of agriculture which the economy could grow more easily on due to France's abundance in natural resources. He left the third estate starving.

Mercantilist policies
Saw economics as another side to war and lead to the pointless war with Dutch. He lost more than he gained.

Cost of Dutch War
The Dutch Tariffs damaged French Exports significantly and France's military capabilities were damaged (see Mercantilistic policies)

Repudiating and renegotiating debt
Successful in short term. Long term problems with Rentiers.

Rentiers
L and JBC's decision to renounce many of the loans they had inherited from Mazarin made L creditworthiness very low, so when they had to go back to the rentiers, they were determined to get their own back
