What are Life Changes?
Things in our life that need a major transition in some aspects of our life. A change where psychic energy needs to be expended

They developed the SRRS which is based on 43 life events taken from patient records, each life event is awarded a Life Change Unit depending on how stressful. The total value is added.

2,500 male american sailors were given SRRS to asses how many life events they had had in the past 6 months, total score was recorded, over following six months health status was recorded for each soldier. The LCU were correlated with health

There was a positive correlation between LCU scores and illness scores.

Experiencing life events increased the chances of a stress related breakdown

TO investigate whether large life changes did have a negative effect on stress levels

What did Michael and Ben-Zur do?
Used 130 participants, both male and female, 50% recently widowed, 50% recently divorced. Measured levels of life satisfaction using a questionnaire

What were the results of Michael and Ben-Zur's experiment?
The widowed group had levels of life satisfaction that were highest before thier partner died, dicorced group had levels of life satisfaction higher after seperation this could be because they turned the life change into a positive one

Critics suggest it is more complex and it is the quality of the event which is more important, the SRRS does not take into account individual differences, most of the research is correlated so doesnt show cause and effect
