Key concepts of biology (section 1)

?
What is an eukaryotic cell?
A cell with a nucleus. e.g animal
1 of 31
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A cell with without a nucleus. e.g Bacteria
2 of 31
What are the different part of the cells called?
subcellular structures
3 of 31
What is the role of the nucleus?
contains genetic infromation that controls the cells activity.
4 of 31
What is the role of cytoplasm?
Gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions take place.
5 of 31
What is the role of cell membrane?
Holds the cell together and what goes in and out
6 of 31
What is the role of mitochondria?
Where most of the chemical reactions occur for respiration
7 of 31
What is the role of ribrosomes?
These are involved in translation of genetic material into the synthesis of proteins.
8 of 31
What is the role of a cell wall in a plant cell?
Made of cellulose. It supports and strengthens the cell
9 of 31
What is the role of a large vacuole in a plant cell?
Contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugars and salts. It maintains the internal pressure to support the cell.
10 of 31
What is the role of the chloroplast in a plant cell?
This is where photosynthesis occurs, which makes food for the cell. They contain green substance called chlorophyll
11 of 31
What doesn't bacteria have that animal and plant cells do?
Nucleus
12 of 31
What is plasmid DNA?
Small loops of extra DNA that arent part of the chromosome.
13 of 31
What is the flagellum?
A long hair like structure that rotates to make the bacterium move.
14 of 31
What is chromosomal DNA?
Controls the cell's activities and replication. It floats free in the cytoplasm.
15 of 31
Describe the function of the nucleus.
Contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell.
16 of 31
Describe the function of the mitrochondria.
Where most of the reactions for respiration take place.
17 of 31
Describe the function of the ribosomes.
Involved in translation of genretic material in the synthesis of proteins.
18 of 31
IN sexual reproduction, what is produced when the nucleus of an eggs cell and a nucleus of a sperm cell?
A fertilised egg cell
19 of 31
What does a the fertilised egg develop into?
An embryo
20 of 31
What is the main function for the egg cell?
To carry the female DNA
21 of 31
Is an egg cell haploid or diploid?
Haploid
22 of 31
What does an egg cell contain?
Nutrients to feed the embryo
23 of 31
What happnes imediatly after the egg has been fertilised?
The cell membrane changes to stop any more sperm from entering the cell. This makes sure the offspring has the correct amount of DNA.
24 of 31
What is the main function for a sperm cell?
To transport the male DNA.
25 of 31
Why does a sperm cell have a long tail?
So it can swim to the egg
26 of 31
Why does sperm have lots of mitrochondriia?
To have the energy to swim to the egg.
27 of 31
Where is the enzmes stored?
Acrosome at the head of the sperm.
28 of 31
Does it contain a haploid or diploid nucleus?
haploid nucleus
29 of 31
What do ciliated epithelial cell line?
Organs
30 of 31
What is the function of the ciliated epithelial cell?
To move substances
