Why may you be permenantly disqualified from jury service?
For serious crimes such as murder

For less serious crimes or ever served a prison sentance or a community order

Anyone on bail

Why may someone be excused from jury service?
If they have a pre-booked holiday, illness (including mental illness which is defined under the Criminal Justice Act 2003), examination or in the armed forces.

They are sent a letter at random in the post

Made to eliminate those who are disqualified as they have a criminal record

It is wider checks made on a jurors background and political affiliations - it is controversial

To the array, for cause and the prosecutions right to 'stand by' jurors

What is challenging to the array mean?
Challenging the whole jury because it has been formed in an unrepresentive and biased way

R v Fraser - a defendant of ethnic minority successfully challenged an all white jury

What is challenging for cause?
Challening the right of an individual juror to sit on the jury

What does it mean when the prosecution have the right to 'stand by' jurors?
The prosecution can send a juror to the back of the list of potential jurors with no reason needed but the juror could still be used if there isnt enough jurors
