 A Mahr (dowry) is given to the wife by the husband before they are married. This is usually a sum of money which will help the wife if she is divorced later on. There will be readings from the Qur’an.

The bride does not have to attend as long as a ‘Wali’ (representative) attends. This is usually a father or uncle
