Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Primary component. It runs the operating system and does calculations. Receives data input from the user, then processes the data and outputs the data displayed on screen.
2 of 14
CPU Heatsink
Used to keep the CPU or processors cool and help prevent them from overheating. This could happen when the CPU is overused.
3 of 14
RAM
Random Access Memory. Memory used when the PC is on such as the operating system or applications on the system. Data is lost when the PC is turned off.
4 of 14
RAM Slots
Allows RAM to be inserted (slotted) into a PC. 2-4 slots in a PC. Located on the Motherboard.
5 of 14
Motherboard Battery
Small batteries attached to the Motherboard. Saves time, hard disk, date etc.
6 of 14
Hard Disk Drive
Normally largest storage device in a PC. The Operating System, software and files are on this. Uses magnetic storage.
7 of 14
Optical Disk Drive
Uses laser lights or electromagnetic waves to read or write data from optical disks (DVD, CD etc).
8 of 14
Power Supply
Supplies power to a PC. Electricity from a power outlet and converts it to the correct current for a PC (Direct Current).
9 of 14
Internal Power Cables
Transfers power to different devices in the PC. Also transfers data from device to device.
10 of 14
Graphics Card
Display Adapter installed in most PC's to provide picture on a Monitor to provide better quality and appearance (colour etc).
11 of 14
Network Interface Chip (NIC)
Card installed on a PC that allows a PC to connect to a network. Typically, a NIC uses an Ethernet connection as it is wired from the Router to the PC.
12 of 14
Data Cable
Any cable that lets base band from a transmitter to a receiver. Ethernet Cable (Cat5e)
