What do you use a password for?

They are a challenge-response test, you can use your security questions to verify your identity.

What is a captcha? and what is it for?
A captcha is a challenge response test where you have to enter the letters and numbers shown. It is to prove that you're not a robot.

What does a captcha protect? how?
A captcha protects systems vulnerable to e-mail spam. It can do this because there is no software that can read the letters displayed and enter them into the required field
