Gave $3 billion of funding for urban renewal, low income housing and low-interest loans for housing

Set up work training programmes for the unemployment

'The Great Society' (1964)
Announced in LBJ's State of Union address to fight war on poverty. He set up over 130 agencies and gave them a budget of $960,000,000

August 1964, Economic Opportunity Act
Created the Economic Office for Opportunity, setting up traiuning and work schemes, adult education, 1000 Community Action Programmes based in rural and urban areas

July 1965, Medicare Act
Took a small contribution from social security and guaranteed free medical care in old age. Medicaid also set up for those on welfare.

October 1966, Child Nutrition Act
Funded schools who couldn't provide lunches. Extended lunch provision to preschools. Offered free breakfasts in schools in deprived areas.

Nixon started dismantling Office of Economic Opportunity. He began to promote the idea of 'workfare not welfare'.

Nixon introduced the Family Assistance Plan to 'rationalise' welfare benefits by combining them. People lost out on welfare benefits.

Nixon extends Food Stamp Act to help more people receive free food

National Consumer Cooperative Bank 1978
Set up to give low interest loans to cooperative organisations (largely in urban areas)

1981, Rural Development Loan
Gave low interest loans, electricity, clinics, farm equipment for communal use.
