Can't be completed by the placenta. Instead occurs in the foetal adrenal cortex under the influence of foetal ACTH which in turn is driven by placental CRH
1 of 6
CRH (Corticotropin Releasing Hormone) Pt 1
Produced by the placenta and acts on the mothers and foetus's Anterior pituitary to produce both cortisol for lung maturation and DHEA from the babies adrenal cortex (Precursor for Oestrogen).
2 of 6
CRH Pt 2
A sudden surge in CRH is thought to act as the trigger for labour.
3 of 6
Pulmonary Surfactant
A Lipoprotein (Surfactant) is present in the liquid film lining the alveoli of the lungs. It reduces surface tension, increases compliance and contributes to lung stability.
4 of 6
HPL (Human Placental Lactogen)
Placental derived hormone that supports foetal well-being. Anti-insulin action in mother boosts available nutritional substrates.
5 of 6
Relaxin
Produced by the corpus luteum and placenta. Results in the softening of the cervix (Dilation). Softening of ligaments of pelvis.
