The stage directions show the audience that Maggie is the one doing all the mental and more challenging work while in contrast o he sisters. This immediately signifies to the audience that it is Maggie that keeps the business on its feet.

We can see that Maggie's attitude to love is cynical as her own marriage is mostly due to business advantage-'you're a marvel in the shop' and 'you're a wonder in the workshop'
