What is confidentiality?
Confidentiality is personal information and medical records have to be kept secure.

What is Consultation?
Individuals in health, social care or childcare environments should be asked their opinions and views about the type of care they would like, and their views and opinions should be accounted.

What is equal & fair treatment?
Individuals should be treated in accordance with the Equality Act and their individual needs.

What is protection from harm & abuse?
All care settings should follow safeguarding procedures to protect children and adults.

What is Choice?
Choice gives individuals control over their lives and promoted independence.

Why is it important to maintains people's rights?
To make them feel valued & raise their self-esteem, empower them & give them control over their lives, instil confidence & trust in care services & in care workers, feel safe in the care setting, provide equality of access to services & treatments.

How can care workers support individuals' rights?
Using vocabulary that can be understood, adapting communication to meet individuals needs or the situation, not being patronising and listening to individuals' needs.

How can you use vocabulary that can be understood?
No jargon, specialist terminology must be explained, age-appropriate vocabulary, simplified language and using interpreters or translators.

How can you adapt communication to meet individual needs or the situation?
Emphasising important words, slowing the pace, increasing tone of voice, repeating where appropriate, using gestures, using specialist methods and technological aids.

How can you prevent being patronising?
Positive body language, no sarcasm, be polite, make them feel as if they are being taken care of seriously, being patient and not ignoring their views or beliefs just because they are different to yours.

How can you listen to individuals' needs?
Demonstrating interest in what the service user is saying, ask questions so do not assume you understand what they are talking about if you don't and concentrate on what they're saying.
