Health and Body

?
What makes up the CNS?
Brain (processes info) + Spinal cord (sends info from brain - controls reflexes when quick response needed, involuntary action).
1 of 18
Peripheral Nervous System:
Nerves and ganglia outside of brain and spinal cord; connects the CNS to the limbs and organs. Relay between cord+ brain and rest of body. If a limb comes into contact with something info will be sent and CNS will cause reaction.
2 of 18
Sensory Division:
Sends info to CNS from internal organs or external stimuli.
3 of 18
Motor Division:
Carries info from the CNS to muscles, glands and organs.
4 of 18
Somatic Nervous System:
Controls skeletal muscle and external sensory organs. Voluntary movement of muscles, aka reflex arc. e.g. blinking, becoming startled, knee jerk,
5 of 18
Autonomic Nervous System:
Impulses from CNS to cardiac and smooth muscle, along with glands. Controls involuntary bodily processes. e.g. blood pressure, breathing and heart rate.
6 of 18
Sympathetic Division:
Fight or flight, can't be controlled. Located in peripheral, begins when come into contact with stress or danger. e.g. pupils dilate, heart rate increase.
7 of 18
Parasympathetic Division:
Reverts sympathetic. Looks after body during rest and recuperation, releases hormones to slow heart rate to normal.
8 of 18
What is the Brain Responsible for?
Coordination centre; takes signals, makes decision and creates output. Connected to rest of body via spinal cord.
9 of 18
How many parts does the brain have?
6, but 3 main - Cerebral Cortex (majority), Cerebellum (back n bottom of brain), Brain Stem (top of spinal cord).
10 of 18
What are the parts of the Cerebral Cortex?
Frontal lobe (front), Temporal lobe (behind temples), Parietal lobe (top), Occipital lobe (back).
11 of 18
Frontal lobe:
Controls cognitive skills e.g. emotions, memory, problem solving, language, judgement, personality. Motor function.
12 of 18
Temporal lobe:
Processes sensory input, connects with hearing and primary auditory cortex. Processes stuff into speech, important to understand speech, sense of pitch and noise ranges.
13 of 18
Parietal lobe:
Processes sensations; touch, taste, temp. Also orientation, recognition, spatial and navigation. Also can help with language processing.
14 of 18
Occipital lobe:
Helps to process what we see, happens fast so we can react to stuff around us.
15 of 18
Cerebellum:
Important for performing every day tasks, walking and writing. Essential for balance and muscle co-ordination.
16 of 18
Brain Stem:
Controls flow of messages between brain and rest of body via spine. Completes basic bodily functions e.g. breathing, swallowing, heart rate and blood pressure. Has 3 parts: mid brain, pins and medulla oblongata.
17 of 18
What is Brain Mapping?
Test that maps the brain to reveal guilty knowledge. Done to interpret behaviour of suspect. Surgical procedure, put grids on brain to find precise source of seizure. Study of anatomy and function of brain and spinal cord via imaging; use cap on head
