speed, stamina, strength and suppleness (flexibility)
2 of 39
what does the respiratory system consist of?(7)
trachea, lungs, alveoli, bronchi, bronchioles, diaphragm and ribs
3 of 39
respiration word equation?
oxygen+glucose---> carbon dioxide+water+energy
4 of 39
what happens when you inhale?
rib muscles contract (up+out), diaphragm contracts (flat), volume of thorax (chest), pressure in lungs decreases.
5 of 39
what happens when you exhale?
ribcage relaxes (down+in), diaphragm relaxes (dome shape upwards), thorax volume decreases, pressure in lungs increses.
6 of 39
Where does gaseous exchange take place?
alveoli
7 of 39
adaptations of alveoli?
Thin walls for gas to pass through, large surface area, good/easy blood supply, moist lining for gases to dissolve.
8 of 39
what is the cillia for?
tiny hairs that trap dust particles in the trachea
9 of 39
what is mucus for?
carrying the dirt trapped by cilia to the mouth/nose to be snorted/ swallowed. hydrochloric acid kills bacteria in the stomach after mucus is swallowed.
10 of 39
what substances does tobacco smoke contain?
nicotine (addictive stuff), carbon monoxide (poisons red blood cells), tar (blocks alveoli, paralyses cilia)
11 of 39
organs in the circulatory system?
blood vessals, heart, arteries, veins, capillaries.
12 of 39
blood vessals
transports substances
13 of 39
heart
a double pump that pumps blood
14 of 39
arteries
carries blood away from the heart
15 of 39
veins
carries blood to the heart
16 of 39
capillaries
carries food, waste, oxygen into body cells.
17 of 39
right heart
pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs
18 of 39
left heart
pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
19 of 39
atrium
- located at the top of the heart -contracts and forces blood into ventricles- has one way valves to force blood
20 of 39
ventricle
below atrium- contracts and pumps blood out of the heart
21 of 39
red blood cells
carries oxygen - no nucleus - biconcave (surface area)-red pigment (haemoglobin)
22 of 39
white blood cells
fights infections-large nucleus
23 of 39
platelets
helps cloth the blood-tiny fragments of cells- no nucleus
24 of 39
plasma
carries food, waste and water etc.- looks like nothing (water)
25 of 39
what is a drug?
a chemical substance that alters the way your body works -pleasure and medicinal
26 of 39
stimulant
drugs that speeds the release of chemicals across the synapse
27 of 39
depressant
drugs that slow down the release of the chemicals across the synapse
28 of 39
analgesis
drugs that block the release of chemicals across the synapse
29 of 39
hallucinogen
drugs that change the release of chemicals across the synapse
30 of 39
functions of the skeleton
support, movement, protection
31 of 39
fixed
cannot move eg skull
32 of 39
hinge
move in one direction e.g elbow
33 of 39
ball socket
move almost in all direction e.g hip
34 of 39
pivot
allows to nod and turn e.g head
35 of 39
gliding
bone that have flat surfaces which van slide over each other to move eg finger
36 of 39
synovial joint
joints that contain synovial fluid
37 of 39
ligamnets
holds bone in place to prevent dislocation
38 of 39
how do muscles work
by contracting and pulling on bones
