What happens as you go down Group 1, the alkali metals?
They become more reactive because the outer electron is more easily lost as it's further from the nucleus. They also have lower melting and boiling points

Low density

Lithium, sodium and potassium- also a couple more like rubidium and caesium

One outer electron- they are very reactive and they all have similar properties

Ionic compounds with non-metals

Why are alkali metals so keen to lose their outer electron?
To form a 1+ ion- there is no way they'd consider sharing so no covalent bonding

What do alkali metals form?
Ionic bonds- they produce white compounds that dissolve in water to form colourless solutions

Reactions with water produces what?
Hydrogen gas

What happens when lithium, sodium and potassium are put in water?
They react very vigorously- They float and move around the surface and fizz furiously

The three main alkali metals produce what?
Hydrogen- potassium gets hot enough to ignite it

A squeaky pop- as the H2 ignites
