Hypotheses

RGs will be: 1) no different to NRGS in terms of skill 2) produce more irrational rationalisms 3) would be subjectively more skill orientated than NRGs 4) think aloud category will be slower

Participants

60 people (44 males, 16 females). 30 RGs with only 1 female, 30 NRGS with 15 females

Method

Each given £3 and asked to stay on for minimum of 60 gambles. They then could keep their winnings and leave or continue playing

Think aloud condition

the participants had to continuously report everything that went through their minds as they gambled

Semi-structured interviews

Is there any skills involved in fruit machines? How skilful do you think you are? If so, what skills do you think are involved?

Findings

RGs had a higher play rate. RGs who thought aloud had a lower win rate. RGs made more irrational verbalisations (14% compared to 2.5%)

10 RGS continued until they had lost everything compared to 2 NRGS. 14 RGS managed to break even. .
