Morpheme
The smallest grammatical unit

A morpheme that can stand on its own as a word e.g. eat, date

A morpheme that cannot stand on its own as a word but combines with others to create a new word e.g. UNhealthy

The joining of two or more indapendant clauses where only one is independant ( the main clause) and the others dependant (subordiante clause/s)

Names that originally came from one company e.g. hoover, google, post it

A word which functions as a name of a specific thing like a person, place, object or action e.g. school, catch

A doing word. It describles a mental or physical action e.g. throwing, skipping

Adjective
A describing word which qualifies a noun e.g. beautiful

Adverb
A word that desbribes another verb or adverb typically expressing manner, place, time or frequency e.g. happily, regularly

Pronoun
A word used in place of a noun or a noun phrase e.g she, he, it, they

Preposition
A word that describes the relationship between two other words e.g. above, around, in. It procedes a noun or pronoun to show the relationship to another word in the sentance

Conjunction
A joining word that is used to express relationships between things in a sentance to link clauses together and combine sentances e.g. and, but, because

Determiner
A modifying word which determines the kind of reference a noun or noun group have. They are using infront of nouns to indicate whether you are refering to something specific. The definite and indefinite articles a, as and the are all determiners

Concentrates on how grammar ought to be structured and sees variation as wrong

Concentrates on how language is actually used and the reasons for this and the effect of it

Simple sentance
Subject + verb e.g. The dog ate, we went, a cow laughed

Gives a sense of time ( the tense) in relation to when the very happened e.g. do, be, have, is ,was

Tells us about aspect and whether the action is ongoing or completed e.g. will, would, could, can, might

Gives more infromation about the time place and manner of an action e.g. We have been living HERE IN THIS HOUSE FOR 20 YEARS, peacefully in our beds WHEN THE EARTHQUAKE STRUCK
