6. What is plucking?

  • When water gets into cracks in a rock and breaks it down.
  • When the pressure of a glacier causes ice to melt and freeze onto the bottom of the glacier, pulling the rock face and collecting rock pieces in the bottom.
  • Rocks removed from abrasion are carried by the glacier and erode the valley sides and bottom causing more rocks to be broken off.

7. How does freeze-thaw weathering work?

  • Water freezes, sticking a glacier to a place in a valley. This causes the land to shadow, which means the weather is colder and their is less sunlight. This kills the plants.
  • When water which gets into cracks and hollows in rocks during the day then freezes at night. The water expands, putting pressure on the rocks and widening the cracks. When the weather is warm, the ice melts and the water thaws. This process repeats.
  • Rocks removed from abrasion are carried by the glacier and erode the valley sides and bottom causing more rocks to be broken off.
