Standing discomfort- Discomfort/pain, in shoulder, arm, hand- Bilateral symptoms- Numbness at or below the level of involvement
1 of 12
What is the mechanism of spinal stenosis?
Age- Degenerative disc disease causes narrowing of the space- Bone spurs develop on the bone and into the spinal canal or foraminal openings- Cognenital- Baby can be born with narrowing of the spinal canal- Trauma- Tumours- RED FLAG
2 of 12
What is the pathophysiology involved in spinal stenosis?
Meyer et al 2008- describe how movement affects the diameter of the spinal canal and cord- Damage = Spinal cord is pinched between the pincers of the end of one vertebral body and the lamina or ligamentum flavum of the caudal segment.

Subjective- What information would you require about spinal stenosis?
Symptoms- Location- Pain scale- Pain type- SIN FACTOR- 24 hr behaviour-red flag- altered sensation, prominent in stenosis- sleep pattern
4 of 12
What information do you require about the history of spinal stenosis?
History of injury- Gradual onset? Degenerative? Age related? Mechansim- Trauma = rule out fracture etc
5 of 12
What information do you require about past medical history in spinal stenosis?
Previous Head injury- 5D'S- VBI- Cauda Equina- Tumour- Important as this could be occupying space thus reduction in nerve canal- THREAD- RA/OA

What medication do you need to be aware of in spinal stenosis?
Medication- Type?- Dosage- Over counter/prescribed

What myotomes can be tested in spinal stenosis?
C7- one of the main vertebrae involved in movement- resisted elbow resisted
9 of 12
What dermatone test can be used in spinal stenosis?
Murphy et al 2006 found - The C5-6 level was most commonly involved- brush over deltoid- tip of thumb- radial side of wrist
10 of 12
What reflex tests can be tested in spinal stenosis?
Amenta et al 2014- Review of the literature found Increased reflexes in the knee and biceps= improtant to asses for myelopathy
11 of 12
What special test is involved in spinal stenosis?
The Spurling's test- looking for cervical nerve root compression causing Cervical Radiculopathy-A positive test of pain radiating into the upper extremity towards the same side the head is tilted
