Site & situation
The site of the settlement is the land on which a settlement is built. The situation is where a settlement is located in relation to the other physical and human features in the area

Individual buildings are spread over an area, no obvious centre to the village.

These settlements have buildings on either side of a road.

Nucleated
Buildings grouped closely together. They often form at crossroads or around a village green.

GIS (geographical information system)
Has a map as a base layer and layers of other information on top of it. Commonly done using computer data bases

Advantages of GIS
Can have lots of info on one map. Info can be linked together easily in layers to show patterns. Available on mobiles. Great benefit to public services. Made travelling between places easier

Disadvantages of GIS
Information can become difficult to see if too much is put onto one map. A computer or ICT equipment needed as maps digital. Equipment expensive and needs a certain amount of training to use the more sophisticated systems.

Uses of GIS
Supermarkets - locating new stores by looking at pop density, transport routes, land for sale etc. Fire brigade - to decide which crew go out and will get there fastest, use it to locate fire, available fire stations, traffic problems etc
